As winter moves on, we’re very excited about moving into a really key phase of the CommuniHeat initiative.

Just to recap, CommuniHeat is all about finding a way for Barcombe to move away from fossil fuel heating in a coordinated way that’s affordable for all of us. If you couldn’t make our webinars, we’ll have more on 4th February at 6.30pm and 8pm. You can register for them, or to take part in the project, via our shiny new website, www.communiheat.org, email us at communiheat@ovesco.co.uk or call 01273 472405.

The situation with Covid-19 is obviously very alarming and fluid, but at the time of writing this, home visits were still allowed under government regulations. We hope that’s still the case by the time you’re reading it! We have three types of energy survey you can volunteer your homes for. With all of them you’ll receive vouchers to spend in local businesses and we’ll provide you with tailored advice about reducing your home’s carbon footprint. The energy use data gathered will show us how to decarbonise our village, and put us in a really good place for the future.

We’ve put together a robust Covid-19 policy that follows official advice, and our local Energy Champions and residents have been issued with guidance for home visits.

Reducing your home’s carbon footprint and lowering energy bills

During lockdown we’ve been receiving lots of questions from local residents on saving energy at home and lowering bills. We want to help! So we’ve trained our Champions to provide a free bill checking service – providing advice on things like switching suppliers, installing efficiency measures or simply paying a bill online. It’s available for all residents – you don’t have to be involved in CommuniHeat. We’re also here to advise on other energy saving measures. There are plenty of these – for example, using energy efficient light bulbs, checking and filling in draughts and upgrading insulation. You can call or email us, or ask one of our Champions.

Also, until March 2022 you can apply for a Green Homes Grant of up to £5,000 (or £10,000 for people on income-based or disability benefits) – see www.greenhomesgrant.campaign.gov.uk

If you have any other questions or ideas, do let us know. And do talk to your friends and neighbours about CommuniHeat! Word of mouth is vital. It’s really important that Ovesco keeps its conversation with the village going, but the most important conversations might be the ones you all have amongst yourselves.
